Thol. Thirumavalavan's Four-Pronged Criticism of the BJP: From AIADMK Weakening to International Diplomacy

Thol. Thirumavalavan's recent interview has emerged as a planned political proclamation in the political landscape of Tamil Nadu. It is not just an exchange of views; he has built a comprehensive critique against the ruling BJP on four key fronts: state politics, national democratic processes, federal relations, and regional foreign policy. This article extensively explores the four important and shocking points he presented in this interview. The objective is to clarify the depth of the issues he has raised and their political impact for the readers.

AIADMK Weakness: BJP's 'Sleight of Hand' or Internal Affair?

Thirumavalavan suggests that behind the exit of senior AIADMK leader K.A. Sengottaiyan, there is a deeper suspicion that goes beyond the party's internal conflict. His central argument is that the incident might be part of a BJP strategy to weaken the AIADMK.

To reinforce this, he puts forth a few key points:

  • It is well-known that Sengottaiyan is very close to Amit Shah and the BJP leadership.

  • The fact that the BJP made no effort to resolve the rift between Sengottaiyan and Edappadi Palaniswami, even while the AIADMK and BJP are alliance partners, raises suspicion.

  • Questions arise such as: Why is the BJP not keen on protecting the stability and discipline of the AIADMK? Why is it passively observing a weakness develop in the party?

He frames his suspicion regarding these events as a forceful question:

"Is the problem between Mr. Edappadi Palaniswami and Mr. Sengottaiyan the only reason, or is this also one of the 'sleight of hand' maneuvers of the BJP? That is a doubt I have."

Voter List: A Revision Task or the Covert Implementation of CAA?

Thirumavalavan severely criticizes the voter list revision work currently being undertaken by the Election Commission, calling it an "action plan to strip citizenship." He alleges that this procedure, referred to as 'SIR' (Special Intensive Revision), is not a regular revision but a covert attempt to implement the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).

Previously, only addition, deletion, and correction were done under the name "Summary Revision." But now, those whose names were not on the voter list before 2002 are compelled to submit one of 13 documents requested by the Election Commission to prove their citizenship. He accuses the BJP of being involved in an attempt to "create the National Register of Citizens by using an unauthorized institution like the Election Commission." He lists the dangers that could arise from this action with statistics:

  • Nationwide: Risk of 10% to 15% of voters being deleted.

  • Tamil Nadu: Risk of nearly 1 crore people being deleted.

  • Bihar: 43 lakh people have already been deleted. Regarding this, he states with pain, "These 43 lakh people are not foreigners; they are the children of this soil."

  • Officials: More than 25 Booth Level Officers nationwide have committed suicide due to work-related mental stress.

For these reasons, he asserts that the VCK strongly opposes this new procedure and will insist on an adjournment motion to discuss this in the upcoming Parliament Winter Session.

Stepmotherly Attitude – Is the Union Government Cheating Tamil Nadu?

Going beyond party politics, Thirumavalavan argues that this weakening strategy also extends to constitutional federalism. He accuses the Union Government of treating non-BJP-ruled states with a "stepmotherly attitude" ever since the BJP came to power.

His argument is that the BJP's objective is to destabilize the Tamil Nadu government and provoke anti-government sentiment among the people. As an example, he points to the negative stance taken by the Union Government on the Metro Rail projects. He states that the VCK continuously condemns this deceitful approach of the Union Government.

New Sri Lankan Constitution – India Must Pressure for Federalism

With the new government led by Anura Kumara Dissanayake having taken office in Sri Lanka, work is underway to draft a new constitution.

In this situation, Thirumavalavan has urged the Indian government to intervene immediately. His main demand is that the Indian government must exert due pressure to ensure that a "Federal System of Administration" is included in Sri Lanka's new constitution to guarantee power devolution to the Eelam Tamils. He stated that he plans to raise this issue in Parliament and will urge the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu again on this matter.
