Buddha Statue in Trincomalee:

Is Gautama Buddha a Tool for Establishing Sinhala Chauvinistic Hegemony on Tamil Soil?

Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi Condemns the Sinhala Rulers!

In the Trincomalee region of Eelam soil, Sinhala Buddhist monks installed a Buddha statue on November 16. When the local Tamil people protested, the police removed it. However, Sinhala Buddhist chauvinists in the Sri Lankan Parliament condemned the action of removing the Buddha statue and vociferously demanded that it be reinstalled immediately. Following this, the same statue was reinstalled in the same location. The JVP government, which projects itself as having a left-wing tradition, has acted in a way that confirms it is merely the usual 'Sinhala chauvinistic state.' The Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi strongly condemns this aggressive hegemonic approach.

Sinhala rulers are continually engaged in installing Gautama Buddha statues in various locations on Eelam soil, the homeland of Tamils, as a form of cultural invasion. They have defined the Sinhalization and Buddhistization of Tamil land as an action plan and are consistently working towards it. This situation persists not only among right-wing parties but also among left-wing groups. Through this, it can be understood that President Anura Dissanayake, like past Presidents, believes the island of Sri Lanka belongs exclusively to the Sinhala Buddhists. Their constitution facilitates this.

The reason for this is that the constitution is based on a Sinhala-Buddhist-Majoritarian single-unit administrative system and contains chauvinistic elements aimed at oppressing the Tamil nation.

It is understood that the government led by President Anura and the National People's Power coalition is planning to draft a new constitution soon.

In this context, for the welfare of the Tamil people, the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi appeals to the Union Government of India to take appropriate measures to ensure the inclusion of a 'federal' administrative system in the constitution for the governance of the nation of Sri Lanka.

Historically, the Union Government of India stood by the Tamils and brought about the 'Indo-Lanka Accord.' We wish to point out that the Indian rulers still have the 'moral responsibility' to urge the Sinhala rulers to implement that agreement.

In that regard, on behalf of the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi, we appeal to the Union Government of India to create an opportunity to grant complete 'autonomy' for the Tamil national community in the new constitution.

The Tamil people are not against the Buddhist religion. A section of the Tamil people lived following the Buddhist religion in the past. Tamil epics like Manimegalai and Kundalakesi are evidence of this. However, the Tamil people strongly oppose the use of Buddhism as a tool to subjugate Tamils, which is against the teachings of Gautama Buddha, completely contrary to Buddhist Dharma, and thus degrades Gautama Buddha himself.

During my recent visit to Jaffna, I was able to perceive the ground reality in Eelam. The Tamil people, who were directly subjected to genocide during the war, are now still being subjected to a planned, structured genocide by Sinhala Buddhist chauvinism. Under the unitary system of governance in Sri Lanka, the Tamil people can never live in peace.

Therefore, we state that ensuring a 'federation' with sovereignty for Tamils in the new constitution will liberate them from such invasions and dominance.
